Gauteng Self-Drive Tours

Gauteng has a unique geography, offering a combination of natural beauty and mineral wealth. Situated on South Africa's Highveld, a high-altitude grassy plateau, the province is home to the picturesque Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountain ranges. The province is also the site of coal and diamond extraction operations, but it is best known for its gold deposits. The Witwatersrand ("ridge of white waters"), which runs through Gauteng – meaning "place of gold" in Sesotho – is famous for being the source of 40% of all the gold ever mined from the Earth.

Johannesburg was originally a mining camp, literally in the middle of nowhere. Today it is a major modern metropolis and the commercial centre of South Africa's economy. Sightseeing includes Gold Reef City (including the Gold Mine Museum) Soweto and the Apartheid Museum, Sandton City (one of the largest shopping centres in South Africa) and the Cradle of Humankind, . The Cradle of Humankind on the West Rand is a large network of fossil hominid sites at the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves and the Lesedi Cultural Village close by provides a showcase of traditional cultures of five of the South African tribes.

Engage in a hot air Balloon Safari over the Magaliesberg or spend a few days at the Pilanesberg National Park or at Sun City.

Holiday at Sun City – a resort with a unique heartbeat and an African rhythm of its own and is unlike any other Resort destination in the world. Deep in the rugged bushveld, in the heart of an ancient volcano, lies a unique resort, built on fantasy. There are four world-class hotels including the magnificent Palace of the Lost City that glitters like a jewel beneath the African sun, brilliant in its rain forest surroundings and luxurious in its detail and design. Activities include the Valley of the Waves, the Super Bowl (for world class shows), golf courses, archery, clay pigeon shooting, casino, health spa, botanical gardens and cultural village. Lush gardens lead down to the lake and Waterworld. There's jet-skiing, windsurfing, water-skiing and for those who want a leisurely booze-cruise, there’s a barge to take you around the lake at Sundowner time.

Adjoining Sun City is the beautiful Pilanesberg National Park, which will delight game viewers as it is a malaria free zone and home to the Big 5. A safari at Pilanesberg National Park offers several accommodation options from low cost self catering chalets to upper class game lodges.

Pretoria (Tshwane) is a city of tree-lined avenues, fascinating architecture and many historic monuments of which The Union Buildings and the Voortrekker Monument are amongst the main sights to see.
